What to Look For

There are a number of signs that may indicate that an elderly friend or loved one is struggling with depression:
  • Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and/or helplessness
  • Irritability, restlessness
  • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable
  • Fatigue and decreased energy
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions
  • Insomnia, early–morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
  • Overeating or appetite loss
  • Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
  • Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not get better, even with treatment
If you or someone you know is showing any of these symptoms, it is important to tell someone and seek help. If these symptoms persist and one becomes suicidal, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-(800) 273-8255 or call 911.
